ABOUT Us

Supporting Every Firefighter Through the Cancer Journey

Bradley R Davidson CFSL, CCFI, CFII, is a 45‑year veteran of the Canadian fire service and the founder of the Canadian Firefighter Cancer Foundation (CFCF). Throughout his career, he has witnessed the profound impact of occupational cancer — now the leading cause of line‑of‑duty death among firefighters in Canada.

With formal leadership training from Dalhousie University (CFSL), advanced investigative certification (CCFI), and instructional expertise as a Certified Fire Instructor II (CFII), Bradley brings a rare combination of operational experience, analytical skill, and evidence‑based training knowledge to his national advocacy work.

He founded CFCF to ensure no firefighter in Canada faces cancer alone — through support, education, and advocacy that strengthens the long‑term health and survivability of the fire service.

Our Founder Story

Bradley R. Davidson CCFI-C CFEI CFII

The Canadian Firefighter Cancer Foundation (CFCF) was founded by Bradley R. Davidson, CCFI, CFII, driven by a deeply personal and professional commitment to protecting the health and future of firefighters across Canada. Through years of service in the fire industry, Bradley witnessed firsthand the growing impact of occupational cancer within the fire service — affecting colleagues, friends, and families. These experiences highlighted a difficult reality: cancer has become one of the most significant threats firefighters face, often long after the fire is out.

Throughout his career, Bradley has been dedicated to fire investigation, safety, and education. His work exposed him to the long-term risks firefighters encounter, including repeated exposure to toxic smoke, hazardous materials, and carcinogens. Over time, he recognized that while firefighters are trained to respond to emergencies, many lacked access to clear, centralized information, support systems, and advocacy focused specifically on occupational cancer.

Motivated by this gap, Bradley founded the Canadian Firefighter Cancer Foundation to create a national platform that supports firefighters and their families while advancing awareness, prevention, and stronger protections. His vision is rooted in compassion, credibility, and action — ensuring that firefighters receive the recognition, resources, and advocacy they deserve.

Bradley believes that no firefighter should face a cancer diagnosis alone. The foundation was built to connect firefighters with trusted information, promote early detection and prevention practices, and advocate for policy improvements that better protect those who serve. By bringing together firefighters, departments, health professionals, researchers, and policymakers, CFCF aims to foster collaboration and drive meaningful change across the country.

In addition to supporting those currently affected, Bradley is committed to protecting future generations of firefighters. Through education, awareness initiatives, and planned events such as the “Science of Survival” conference, the foundation will continue to promote research-driven solutions and encourage proactive health and safety practices within the fire service.

The creation of CFCF reflects Bradley’s dedication to honouring those lost to occupational cancer, supporting those currently fighting, and safeguarding the future of Canada’s firefighters. His mission is simple yet powerful: ensure that every firefighter and family knows they are supported, informed, and never alone.

Resources

The Canadian Firefighter Cancer Foundation (CFCF) provides accessible, evidence-based resources to help firefighters, families, and departments better understand occupational cancer risks and take proactive steps toward prevention, early detection, and support. Our goal is to centralize reliable information and make it easy to access when it matters most.

Cancer Risk Information

Firefighters face increased exposure to carcinogens through smoke, soot, diesel exhaust, and contaminated gear. These exposures can occur during active fire suppression, overhaul, training, and even within station environments. Our resources highlight common risks, exposure pathways, and practical steps firefighters can take to reduce long-term health impacts

Prevention & Decontamination

Reducing exposure is critical. CFCF provides guidance on best practices including gross decontamination on scene, proper gear cleaning, safe handling of contaminated equipment, station hygiene, and limiting cross-contamination. These preventative measures help departments and individuals adopt safer routines that protect both firefighters and their families.

Early Detection Guidance

Early detection saves lives. We share information on recommended screenings, warning signs, and the importance of regular medical checkups. Our resources encourage firefighters to track exposures, understand their risk factors, and seek medical advice when symptoms appear. Proactive monitoring helps improve outcomes and supports long-term health.

Research & Trusted Links

CFCF connects users to credible research, national and international studies, and firefighter-specific cancer data. These materials support informed decision-making for firefighters, departments, and policymakers. As new research emerges, this section will continue to grow, ensuring access to the latest knowledge and best practices.
